As usual, I find the NY Times Picks comments to be more spot on than Brooks himself, though I do think he brings up an interesting topic. One Picks comment mentioned the pervasive influence of money in our political system these days and how it leads to politicians who aren't really leaders. I also agree with your thoughts about how politicians are more exposed than they used to be. This comment struck me as accurate as well: The follower problem and the leadership problem are the self-same problem in two manifestations. People who are unwilling to hear difficult, sometimes bitter, truths will only accept political "leaders" who pander to their desire for comfort. And there never has been, nor will there be, a dearth of those willing to tell people what they wish to hear in order to obtain and aggrandize their own power.

Interesting post. I just read an article in FastCompany that had some interesting points about future jobs and the skills needed for those gigs.

They post this fact: "the median number of years a U.S. worker has been in his or her current job is just 4.4, down sharply since the 1970s." They argue that job length will be in the decline and more and more people will jump around. They would argue that the girls should become "T-shaped" - meaning someone with has both depth in one subject and breadth in others. This type of person will be able to adapt best to industries being created and destroyed quickly in the future.

I thought it was interesting to think about. The idea of learning a skill and using that for the majority of your life seems old school.

I really enjoyed reading this.

I manage a Voice of the Customer program for a B2B telecom company, and I just spent the past four weeks on the road, a different city a day, listening to customers. That was the entire extent of my job for this past month. What I love about what I do is the ability to take the time to do that, to look at what they say in conjection with other areas that they're talking to us (sat surveys, account meetings), and advise the business on what needs fixing in the current state and what needs considering for our future state.

In my (humble) opinion: it's the best job in the company.
